Ranch Animals (Part 1)

I'm gonna be doing a few posts for the animals on our ranch.

Starting with the cattle.
We have about 200-300 head. I like cows, but it's the calves that I really think are fun. They're so cute  when they're first born! I LOVE chasing cattle on horses. Especially on a good trained horse. Once he knows were you want the cow, you just sit back and hang on. He'll do the work.

Almost nothing is better than living on a ranch, smelling the manure and hearing a mama cow beller to her calf.

We do not have hired hands, but sometimes young men will stay a night or two and dad will show them some stuff. Or my cousin or uncle will come and help fence a pasture.

Most of our cattle are out in the pasture, but some are always in the corrals around the house.

Aren't the calves cute?!!!!!

The milk cows and one of their calves. His name is Lawrence.   :)

Okay. But seriously. He's so CUTE!!!!

When he was first born, he was as big as the two month old calf that the other milk cow ( named Posey) has!

These good looking ladies are our 2 year old (first calf, is what we call them because they are having their first calves this year.) heifers.

Thanks for reading this! Next Saturday, I'll post about the horses.

Canoeing

Alright. Whew! I can't believe it's time for another post already. Summer gets busy on the ranch. REALLY busy.

Spring is not aaaaaaas busy, but the cows have there calves, and we to make sure everything is going right. We always have ta pull a few calves every year. Dad actually does it, and we help out with the little things like getting the iodine water ready, or bringing him plastic gloves.

Anyways, Larissa, Landon, Lawson and I went canoeing in our slough. It was fun, but I prefer to be on horseback.

  Pictures.......

Larissa and I in our own canoe....

And the boys in there's.

I love it were we live. Perfect for a nice ride on the top of a horse.

Hills lay stretched out as far in each direction as you can see.

Riss and I stopped to pick some wild flowers.

I guess Landon was trying to be an Indian. Haha!

But now the righteousness of God without law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and prophets;

Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference:
For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God;
Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:

Horsin' Around!

Lately I've been working with Chorus (my two year old filly whom I adore) every day. She's doing GREAT!
Dad is helping me some too. I can get her to lope when I ask her, trot when I ask her, walk when I ask her, and STOP. Oh, and she'll also slow down on command.
And change directions.
And pick up all four feet.

I was letting her graze and the little bottle calf named Barney came trotting up. Cory's head snapped up and her ears pricked forward.
Barney came closer cautiously and licked Cory right on the nose. Then Chorus nipped him! And went back to eating.

Notice that her head is low and calm......

Is my horse beautiful or what?!!!

                                            1 Thessalonians 5:14-18

Now we exhort you, brethren, warn them that are unruly, comfort the feebleminded, support the weak, be patient toward all men.
See that none render evil for evil unto any man; but ever follow that which is good, both among yourselves, and to all men.
Rejoice evermore.
Pray without ceasing.
In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.

Yum!

We got one-hundred chicks the other day. It's something we've done every year for as long as I can remember. Right now they're cute, but those yellow, peeping little furry balls of fuzz will turn into ugly white roosters.
And then we will do the hardest part of the whole chick thing--- Butchering them. I will be VERY happy when they're in the freezer so we don't have to (Oops! I meant "get to") feed them anymore.

They are fun to play with right now. Lawson and I have been going out to the shop and holding them.
We've tried naming them, but as soon as we put it back in the herd (Aaaaahh! What do you call a bunch of birds?) he just blended in and we couldn't tell him apart from the others.

I'm trying to think of a way that's not permanent to label them. Hmmmm....

Zip ties aren't easy to take off when the chick's leg gets big and it'll make the leg start to cut off circulation.

Twist ties are so big that when you twist 'em up around the peeper's leg, he'll trip. But..... it would be a good leg-strengthening exercise if you want really strong legged roosters.

And.... I've thought about a few other ideas too, but none sound like they would work.

But its not that big of a deal. The chicks won't be cute for long, and I'll be weirded out at myself that I ever wanted to name the ugly chickens when the are grown-up.

The chicks are so cute now, though!

Here's a picture of them:

Do you have any name ideas?

I'd love to hear from you!
Comment below if ya have anything to say!

Here is a random Bible verse that I found when I was reading my bible:

                                          Psalms 47:1-3

O clap your hands, all ye people; shout unto God with the voice of triumph.
For the Lord most high is terrible; he is a great King over all the earth.
He shall subdue the people under us, and the nations under our feet.

What a Photoshoot With Your Little Brother Will Turn Out Like......

Yesterday, my little brother Lawson took pictures of me jumping off a empty molasses lick container that the cows cleaned out with there tongues.

Just think about it for a second.

Yup! My six year old brother Lawson, ran a huge, expensive Canon camera that I can barely handle.

He sat on the grass in the pasture for a whole minute just looking through the lens, so I asked him what he was doing. He frowned.
"I'm getting it into focus, Lexah." He said as he twisted the camera lens like an expert photographer would do.

I took some of the pictures, too, I guess.

His tongue is sticking out and everything. Haha!

Some of the pictures are ALMOST silhouettes.....

Oh, the random and weird things that my brothers and me do........

Another half-way silhouette.

   Thanks for reading this post!

Miniature Horse, Miniature Steer, Miniature Person

Lawson and I were riding our miniature ponies in the arena, and we got the bottle calf in so we could rope him off the ponies.

Roping off of the pony I trained! I'm so proud of her! But sadly,
I'm getting too big to ride her. *Big sigh*
I got him!
Peaches decided that she didn't want to play "roping" anymore. So she bolted.

Someday I'll be doing this off of my own, full sized, horse named Chorus!

My First Post

Howdy! My name is Lexah, but you can call me Lexi. I love Jesus, horses, cattle, and just plain ol' livin' on the Nelson Ranch.

I'm homeschooled, and I'm so thankful I am.

I like training my filly with my Dad, playing with my brothers and working on the ranch. I also like playing my fiddle, eating (especially steak and mashed potatoes), and telling people about the Good News.

My favorite colors are green, red and chestnut colored brown. (The color that a chestnut colored horse would be.)

Bye for now!
