What I've Been Doing Lately....

On the nice days I've been riding Cory, my two year old filly and helping with Fall Roundup (not just on our ranch, neither.) , and on the not nice days I've been scooping manuare in the Bobcat for dad. I don't have no picture of that, thou.

My horse Chorus.....

Isn't that horse so pretty?

I would be jealous of my cousin if I didn't have Chorus....

As soon as I let him go in the grass he disappeared!

Stil Willin the Turtle

Guess what! Grandpa found a turtle crawling across his front yard and brought it over here! I was REALLY exited. The green five gallon bucket next to the cage in the picture is what he came over in. he was real mad an' he hissed and waved his claws (and boy are those things sharp!) when I tried to feed him a worm.(turtles eat cooked chicken or turkey, raw beef, er worms.)So Landon Lawson and me hauled one of Rissa's old bunny cages up from a dusty corner and made what we thought a turtles home at the lake would be like. He's still alive, so we must not've done too terrible a job.

When the girls and I were at Farmers Market one of us said "I'm still willin' to do that if you what too." Then Larissa said, "that sounds like an odd name."

Stil Willin the Villian, I thought.
"I'm gonna name my turtle that." I suddenly decided.

It's real funny to watch him crawl outta his oversized bathtub. I have a video of it, but I don't know how to post videos on here.

This is how he gets himself outta there.

His belly and sides are beautiful. God's paintings are more than breath taking.

This is Lawson's newest look.

Ranch Animals (Part 6)

Last week I forgot to put the turkeys in the post about the chickens. So I guess these lucky ducks (get it?) will have their very own post. (Uh, besides the bunny.)
Last post I also posted it a day early! Boy, I sure musta been frazzled that day.

I remember when Dad decided that we should try turkey meat. I was probably about six er seven. About ten of then lived out of twenty. We had some black ones, three red ones, a lot of grays, and a white. We always have too much for Thanksgiving and Christmas.
The Toms (Male turkeys) were always SO mean. no matter how hard I would beat the snot outta them they would never learn lesson. We've even knocked 'em clean out. Later they come back plotting revenge. Sometimes I'll get my my pony and barrel at 'em full speed. they normally swerve into some trees. that sure does make me madder than a hornet.

It was always fun to see the mamas come into the yard with a dozen or two babies at her side. Dad found in the News Paper that red turkeys are the yummiest. After that the red hen was his favorite. But, you see, there was no red papa to get red babies from. That sure disapointed Father! He thought the white one would work, but no! Finally we traded our friends some grays for some reds.

If you think they're pretty, get to know 'em better. That thought 'll leave your mind quicker than a bullet leaves the gun barrel.

This is our only bunny. He is so cute, don'tcha think? Larissa used to have a whole hutch of them and get babies and every thin'. I guess she grew out of it, and set them free. Now, uh, there's only one left.  And how come he's survived the cats and coyotes and raccoons? One: he's too smart and fast. He slips under a hole he made in the shed. Two: Lady the dog won't let them get her. She'll le them dink around with him, but I they get serious then they're in fer it. Plus, the cats don't really have a reason to

be hungry for bunny meat. The boys an' I supply them with tons of gofer carcasses.

His name is 'Dug'. (Get it? Sometimes we say that "Dug dug a hole.")

Happy Independence Day, folks!

To wrap up the ranch animals, hears a bible verse:

                                                          Genesis 1:25

And God made the beast of the earth after his kind, and cattle after their kind, and  every thing that creepeth upon the earth after his kind: and God saw that it was good.

Ranch Animals (Part 5)

Folks, I'm really dreading saying this. *Inhales deeply....* I reckon I'll have ta slow down to posting somethin' once a week. Or a LEAST fer the summer. *...... And blows out breath*

This weeks post is 'bout the chickens. See that thing in the picture below? We call them "chicken tractors". Every year we git a hundred butcher chicks, raise 'em up in the summer and butcher them in the fall. We keep 'bout twenty-five in each tractor.

The layin' hens are my job. Ever since I was five years old (stories get stretched....) they've been my job. We used ta have a fence 'round our garden, but fer some reason that I don't remember we took it down.

Mama didn't like my hens scratching up her cucumbers so we ha to put them In a tractor just like the other chickens.

This is my prize Banty rooster, Oliver. He's two thirds the size o' the laying hens! Boy, he sure do think he's he's somethin', strutin' around the lawn. I call him "King of the yard".

This hen is fixin' to lay an egg in the makeshift nest.

Busy, Busy, Busy

Alright, folks. So sorry there won't be another ranch animals post for I don't know how long. On Saturday was my sisters graduation and I meant to do a post about it but life got to busy. Yesterday and today I've been riding hard and fast getting all our cows and calves in to work them. First they get a shot and then an ear tag. If its a bull calf then he gets a band too. It's something we do every year.

That's a lot of ol' cows to chase in, guys!

(All of our cattle in total is a lot.)
